Scandinavian-influenced place-names in East Anglia have been largely overlooked in academic studies of Viking settlement. However, recent discoveries of Scandinavian metalwork and jewelry in the region have shed new light on the processes of migration and settlement during the Viking period. This book presents the first comprehensive analysis of these place-names, examining their linguistic categories and exploring their landscape and archaeological contexts. Using GIS-generated maps, Dr. Boulton demonstrates how the process of Viking settlement was influenced by changes in rural society and agriculture, such as the late Anglo-Saxon expansion of arable farming and the associated recolonization of the inland clay plateau. These developments resulted in patterns of place-name formation that differ significantly from some of the previously accepted interpretations. Boulton proposes an innovative, hypothetical model for the formation of the Scan.
