Have you ever crafted a mix tape for someone you hold dear? Forty years ago, a group of scientists, artists, and writers convened in a house in Ithaca, New York, to embark on the creation of the most significant compilation ever conceived. It wasn't a transfer from one person to another; rather, it was a transmission from Earth to the Cosmos. In 1977, NASA dispatched Voyager 1 and 2 on a grand tour of the outer planets. During the design phase of the Voyager mission, it became apparent that these resilient probes would eventually depart from our solar system and drift endlessly in the unfathomable void of interstellar space. Considering this bleak outcome, NASA decided to take a positive approach. They commissioned astronomer Carl Sagan to craft a message that would be affixed to the side of Voyager 1 and 2 – a plaque, a calling card, a handshake to any passing alien that might one day encounter them. The result was the Voyager Golden Record, a multi-genre, multi-media metal LP. A 90-minute playlist featuring music from across the globe, a sound essay of life on Earth, spoken greetings in multiple languages, and over 100 photographs and diagrams, all meticulously selected by Sagan and his team to serve as a guide for extraterrestrial beings. The record encompassed music by J.S. Bach and Chuck Berry, a message of peace from US President Jimmy Carter, facts, figures, and dimensions, all encased in a golden box.
The Vinyl Frontier chronicles the story of NASA's interstellar mix tape, from the initial phone call to the final launch, when Voyager 1 and 2 departed from our planet, carrying their hopeful message from the summer of 1977 to a distant future.
