  • More about Vittoria Martini: Thomas Hirschhorn: The Bijlmer Spinoza-Festival. The Ambassador's Diary

The Bijlmer Spinoza-Festival is a sculpture created by Swiss artist Thomas Hirschhorn in 2009 in the Bijlmer borough of Amsterdam. Art historian Vittoria Martini was invited by Hirschhorn to be an eyewitness to the sculpture, which challenged the profession's certainties by empowering and activating the role of art history. Martini's commentary leads to the understanding that a work that no longer exists physically can live on in the mind elsewhere, at some other time, because it has become universal.

The Bijlmer Spinoza-Festival is a remarkable artwork that took shape in 2009, crafted by the Swiss artist Thomas Hirschhorn in a peripheral borough of Amsterdam known as the Bijlmer. This captivating book takes us on a journey through the eyes of its "Ambassador," art historian Vittoria Martini, who was graciously invited by the artist to bear witness to the existence of this precarious masterpiece. Hirschhorn views this term as a positive and creative force, serving as a means to assert the significance of the present moment and the particular place, to connect with eternity and universality. By actively challenging the established norms of the art historical profession, Hirschhorn empowered and activated the role of the art historian, leading Martini to discover a new methodology she refers to as "precarious art history." Through her vivid account of experiencing the physical presence of The Bijlmer Spinoza-Festival, Martini's commentary deepens our understanding of how a work that no longer exists in the physical realm can continue to thrive in the mind—in another time and place, thanks to its universal nature.
