Sub-Saharan Africa faces numerous public health challenges, including food insecurity, infectious diseases, limited access to clean water, poor nutrition, and inadequate healthcare services. The most pressing challenge is the lack of access to clean water, particularly in rural and urban areas, exacerbated by pollution and climate change. This book aims to generate a water resources inventory, explore water crises in both urban and rural settings, understand the causatives of the crises, and suggest viable solutions to manage the water challenges using named case studies to improve understanding and advise scholars and policymakers on priority research areas and action plans for sustainable development.

Sub-Saharan Africa faces numerous public health challenges, including food insecurity, a rise in infectious diseases, limited access to clean water, poor nutrition, and inadequate healthcare services for its population. Among these challenges, the most pressing one is the lack of access to clean water for both rural and urban populations, which has been exacerbated by extensive pollution and climate change crises.
Water access and supply affect both rural and urban populations. In rural areas, water is typically accessed through yard taps or water kiosks managed by private owners. However, in arid regions, access to water is more challenging, and individuals may rely on water trucks or other means to obtain their daily supply.
Among the urban poor, water access is compromised by poor supply infrastructure, especially in informal settlements. This lack of infrastructure can lead to long queues for water, contamination during the supply chain, and other risks to public health.
This book aims to address this knowledge gap by conducting a comprehensive water resources inventory for Sub-Saharan Africa. It will explore the water crises in both urban and rural settings, understand the causative factors behind these crises, and suggest viable solutions to manage the water challenges using named case studies.
The primary objective is to improve understanding of the regions water problems and provide guidance to scholars and policymakers on priority research areas and action plans to enhance water management for sustainable development. By examining the specific cases of different countries and regions, this book will contribute to the development of effective strategies and policies to address the water crisis in Sub-Saharan Africa.
