At the tender age of fourteen, Frederick Robinson embarked on a remarkable journey, joining the ranks of the Loyalists during the War of Independence. Despite the eventual defeat of his Loyalist forces, his family sought refuge in England, grappling with the harsh realities of poverty. Following his service against the French in the West Indies, Robinson took up a role in army recruitment in London. His military career took a significant turn in 1813 when he joined the Peninsular campaign as a Brigade Major General.

Through his journals and letters, Robinson vividly captured the local topography, as well as the diverse personalities he encountered. He painted a vivid picture of the British grandees of Oporto, landed gentry, priests, peasants, Wellington and his generals, as well as the ordinary soldiers who served alongside them. He also provided detailed accounts of the marches across vast lands and the pivotal battles of Vitoria, San Sebastian, the Nime, and Toulouse.

Subsequently, Robinson assumed command of a division in America during the War of 1812. His military exploits continued as he served as a Regimental Colonel after holding colonial governorships in Upper Canada and Tobago. Remarkably, Robinson's service to the British Army spanned an astonishing 38 years, making him the longest-serving soldier in the British Army upon his passing in 1852.

Frederick Robinson's remarkable life and military career serve as a testament to the indomitable spirit and dedication of those who have served their country with unwavering loyalty and bravery. His journals and letters provide a valuable glimpse into the historical context of the times, shedding light on the lives and experiences of ordinary soldiers and the leaders who guided them.
