Wind, a powerful force of nature, has the ability to move both physical objects and the intangible realm of human thoughts. It serves as a symbol of both new beginnings and the inevitable decline, representing control and chaos, and its destructive impact is a central topic in discussions surrounding climate change.
To explore the unseen elements of air, wind, and breath, KUNST HAUS WIEN is presenting an exhibition titled "Wenn der Wind weht / When the Wind Blows." In collaboration with the University of Applied Arts Vienna, this exhibition showcases over twenty artistic projects that bring these invisible forces to life in unique and captivating ways.
In his text "Flying Robert and His Kin," Ernst Strouhal delves into the cultural stories associated with the wind, tracing its historical and symbolic significance. Meanwhile, curators Verena Kaspar-Eisert and Liddy Scheffknecht examine air as a medium in contemporary art, highlighting its potential for artistic expression and exploration.
This publication serves as a companion to the exhibition, providing a deeper insight into the artistic and cultural dimensions of wind. It features works by renowned artists such as Hoda Afshar, Ólafur Elíasson, Ulay / Marina Abramović, and many others. Additionally, a conversation between historian/author Philipp Blom and climate researcher Helga Kromp-Kolb adds an academic and scientific perspective to the discussion.
Through its diverse range of projects and perspectives, "Wenn der Wind weht / When the Wind Blows" invites viewers to contemplate the power and beauty of wind, while also raising awareness about its environmental and societal implications.
