Research is an integral part of our culture, receiving significant investment and recognition from governments, industries, and academic institutions worldwide. However, the concept, practice, and social life of research have yet to be thoroughly studied. Despite the vast array of knowledge and information available, only forty-three items in the catalog of the Library of Congress are categorized as "Research—History." To delve into the understanding of research as a concept and practice, Bard Graduate Center convened a group of distinguished individuals, including artists, scientists, and humanists, who have received MacArthur "genius" grants. These individuals, moderated by Peter N. Miller, a MacArthur Fellow, engaged in three evenings of insightful discussions. The conversations covered a wide range of topics, exploring the nature of research from various perspectives. The participants included theater director Annie Dorsen, biomedical researcher Elodie Ghedin, sculptor Tom Joyce, physicist Hideo Mabuchi, poet Campbell McGrath, photographer and filmmaker An-My Lê, neuroscientist Sheila Nirenberg, geochemist Terry Plank, and historian Marina Rustow. Each of these individuals brought their unique expertise and experiences to the discussions, challenging preconceived notions and shedding light on the multifaceted nature of research. Throughout the evenings, the participants grappled with fundamental questions about the purpose, methods, and implications of research. They discussed the ethical considerations involved in conducting research, the role of intuition and creativity in scientific inquiry, and the impact of research on society and culture. They also explored the relationship between research and other fields such as art, literature, and politics, highlighting the ways in which research can inspire and inform artistic expression and societal change. The conversations were rich in insights and thought-provoking, offering a deeper understanding of research as a dynamic and interdisciplinary field. By bringing together artists, scientists, and humanists, Bard Graduate Center aimed to foster a broader dialogue and promote a more comprehensive appreciation of research's significance in shaping our world. The insights and perspectives shared during these evenings will undoubtedly contribute to the ongoing exploration of research and its impact on our lives.
