This book delves into the intricate and critical challenges facing EU integration, encompassing political and economic governance, constitutional status, and citizenship. It serves as a comprehensive exploration by examining the profound insights of one of the most innovative Portuguese voices in EU studies, Francisco Lucas Pires. In his final work, translated into English for the first time, Lucas Pires critically analyzes the Treaty of Amsterdam, delving into its enactment process and its far-reaching implications for the EU. This book features insightful commentary from six young and prominent EU law scholars, each bringing their unique perspectives to bear on Lucas Pires' profound, original, and prophetic observations. The result is a thought-provoking and insightful reflection, aimed at both researchers of EU law and policymakers, on the successes and shortcomings of the European project. It offers fresh perspectives on a significant yet often overlooked moment in the EU's history, while also providing valuable avenues for critical thinking in the development of European integration.
