  • More about Where the Hornbeam Grows: A Journey in Search of a Garden

When Beth Lynch moved to Switzerland, she felt out of place and lonely. To make herself feel at home, she started a garden, which took her across the country to the rugged hills of the Swiss Jura. Through this experience, she learned to garden in a new way, taking cues from the natural world and forging connections to her new soil, old life, and deceased parents. WHERE THE HORNBEAM GROWS is a memoir about carrying a garden inwardly through loss, dislocation, and relocation, finding a sense of wellbeing in a green place, and the limits of paradise in a peopled world.

When Beth Lynch relocated to Switzerland, she soon realized that simply wanting to connect with people would not ensure a successful move. Feeling out of place and lonely, Beth knew she had to put in the effort to establish roots. And so, she embarked on a mission to make herself feel at home in the way she knew best: by tending a garden and cultivating plants.

Her search for a garden took her across the country, traversing meadows and mountain paths where familiar garden plants thrived in the wild. Eventually, she found herself in the rugged hills of the Swiss Jura, a remote and unfamiliar place adorned with glow worms, dormice, and singing toads.

In this unfamiliar environment, Beth learned to garden in a new way, taking inspiration from the natural world around her. As she planted her paradise with hellebores, aquilegias, cornflowers, and Japanese anemones, these cherished species formed deep connections: to her new soil, to her past life in England, and to her deceased parents, whose Sussex garden continued to bloom in her heart.

WHERE THE HORNBEAM GROWS is a memoir that explores the process of carrying a garden inward through loss, displacement, and relocation. It delves into finding solace and well-being in a green space of one's own, while also acknowledging the limitations of paradise in a populated world. Through a captivating literary voice, the book offers a powerful exploration of how nurturing a corner of the natural world can nurture us as individuals.
