In the context of what is often perceived as turbulent times, this book delves into the exploration of the potential and desirability of reintroducing integrated theory into the realm of globalization research. While it may be challenging to establish a singular and comprehensive 'grand theory of globalization in itself, can there be room for the development of a comprehensive and systematic approach to understanding the dynamics of globalization across time? To put it another way, can global theorizations be holistic and integrative, harmoniously coexisting with methodological frameworks that acknowledge the complex and multifaceted layering of diverse transnational practices across all social relations?

It is worth considering whether it is feasible to establish a general and integrated approach to globalization that effectively connects theory and practice in a socially engaged manner, and whether such an endeavor is desirable. Numerous significant academic and non-academic developments indicate otherwise. For instance, the postmodernist shift that occurred towards the end of the last century manifested a profound skepticism towards 'grand narratives' in the social sciences and humanities. A decade later, certain neo-Marxist critics levied criticism against the 'follies of globalization theory.' More recently, the 'post-truth interventions' of national populists have suggested not only that 'globalism' is a political adversary but also that attempts to comprehend its patterns and manifestations are subjective or irrelevant.

Against the backdrop of Manfred Steger and Paul James' acclaimed book, Globalization Matters, contributors from diverse disciplinary, analytical, and normative perspectives offer a thoughtful and much-needed evaluation of the scholarship of globalization and the various ways in which it is theorized. The chapters included in this book were originally published as a special issue of the journal Globalizations.
