Diana Anphimiadi is a highly respected poet from her generation in Georgia. Her exceptional work showcases a remarkably inquisitive intellect and skillfully navigates between classical references and surreal imagery. She breathes new life into ancient myths and challenges the boundaries of our senses. With a bold and imaginative approach, prayers intertwine with recipes, dance instructions alongside definitions. Her playful and witty lyricism reveals a glimpse of the eternal within the ordinary. The poems included in this selection have been collaboratively translated into English by the award-winning British poet Jean Sprackland and the accomplished Georgian translator Natalia Bukia-Peters. Their translation work, titled "Beginning to Speak," was published in 2018 and received high praise from Adham Smart in Modern Poetry in Translation for effectively capturing the electrifying essence of Anphimiadi's language, which flows seamlessly from one poem to the next in Bukia-Peters and Sprackland's masterful translation. This Georgian-English dual language edition is co-published with the Poetry Translation Centre.
