Winter's End: A Mystery

In Benedict, Alaska, the annual Death March takes place, where citizens search for those who may have gotten stuck at home during the winter. Beth Rivers sets off with her friend Orin to check on an elderly resident, but Orin disappears. Gril informs Beth that one of the mystery men is dead, and the other is missing. Beth and Gril are concerned about Orin's top-secret research, and Beth continues her search for her father, who is allegedly alive in Mexico.

Beth Rivers sets off with her friend Orin and dog Gus, towards the cabin of an elderly resident, intending to check on him. As Beth and company make their way, Orin mentions that he is concerned about two men who showed up for the March. Neither he nor the police chief, Gril, recognized the men. When they reach the cabin, the old man is alive, but not in the best shape. Beth stays with him while Orin hurries to town for help, but it is not Orin who returns. Gril comes back with the shocking news that one of the mystery men was just found dead in town, and the other is missing. And now, Gril cannot find Orin. Beth and Gril are both concerned, especially considering how cryptic Orin has been of late. When they discover that Orin has been doing some top-secret research, they start to worry that he has been exposed or worse. Meanwhile, Beth continues on her own search for her father, who allegedly is alive in Mexico, but will not return her calls. Still, she is making progress in healing from her own trauma, though she cannot quite shake the feeling that she is being followed. As the days pass, Beth and Gril become increasingly worried about Orin's whereabouts. They search the town, but cannot find any sign of him. They even contact the FBI, but they are unable to provide any assistance. One night, Beth receives a call from a mysterious man who claims to know where Orin is. He tells her that Orin is in danger and that she needs to hurry to find him before it is too late. Beth is skeptical, but she has no choice but to follow the man's instructions.
