  • More about Within, Against, and Beyond Liberalism: A Critique of Liberal IPE and Global Capitalism

The book offers a comprehensive description of liberalism while also critiquing and expanding upon it, particularly in the context of IPE where liberalism faces a crisis of confidence. It highlights the variegated nature of liberalism and the tensions and doubts that can lead to defensive maneuvers, but also identifies moments of openness that connect to traditions that think against and beyond its central tenets.

This book offers a comprehensive and generous exploration of liberalism, while also critically engaging with and extending beyond it. It engages with liberalism and its variants in the field of International Political Economy (IPE) at a time when liberalism and liberal internationalism face a crisis of confidence. While we are critical of liberalism, particularly the dominant variant in IPE, we recognize that liberalism is diverse and characterized by internal doubts and tensions that can open it up to alternative traditions of thought. These tensions and doubts often lead to defensive reactions, such as Eurocentric conceptions of development that justify Western dominance and the rejection of scholarship that exposes relations of domination and subordination as violating the principles of positivist science. However, by acknowledging these defensive reactions, we can also identify moments of greater openness within liberalism that connect to traditions that challenge and transcend its core principles.
