  • More about WM. BRANDT'S SONS & CO.: The Story of a Family Trading Company

The Brandt family, a merchant family from Stettin (now in Poland), moved to Hamburg in 1686 and established a successful trading business. Over the generations, the family expanded its operations, and in 1805, Wilhelm Brandt's older brother Emanuel Heinrich moved to London to set up an agency for the Archangel business, which later became the family bank. The bank experienced significant growth in the 1960s and was taken over by National and Grindlays before being sold in 1972. This book, with over 70 illustrations, provides a detailed account of the family's history, including family portraits, houses, documents, and artefacts from the archives. It also includes maps of Germany, the Baltic, England, and Archangel, showing the places associated with the family and their businesses.

In 1686, the merchant Paul Brandt relocated from Stettin, which is now in Poland, to Hamburg. His business experienced remarkable growth, and four generations later, at the age of fifteen, Wilhelm Brandt entered an apprenticeship under the merchant Alexander Christian Becker in Archangel. The trading activities of the Brandt family expanded to encompass a diverse range of commodities, including timber, flax, skins, and sugar. In 1805, Wilhelm's older brother Emanuel Heinrich relocated to London and established the agency for the Archangel business, which eventually evolved into the family bank.

The ninth generation of the Brandt family, Peter Augustus Brandt, was born in 1931. After completing his education at Eton, Cambridge, and serving in the Royal Navy, he joined the family business in 1954, eventually rising to the position of managing director in 1966. Following the bank's successful decade in the 1960s, it was acquired by National and Grindlays and eventually sold in 1972, marking a remarkable span of 160 years since its founding. This comprehensive book is adorned with over 70 illustrations, many of which are in color, showcasing family portraits, houses, documents, and artifacts from the archives. Additionally, maps of Germany, the Baltic, England, and Archangel provide visual representations of the places associated with the Brandt family and their businesses.
