  • More about Zookeepers' War: An Incredible True Story from the Cold War

The Zookeepers War is a quirky piece of Cold War history, fought between the zoos on either side of the Berlin Wall in the 1960s. It tells the story of how the head zookeepers on either side started an animal arms race, diverting state funds towards giving these new animals lavish welcomes. The book explores the desperate rivalries, human follies, and animal-mad city in which zookeeping became a way of continuing politics by other means.

The Cold War's most peculiar proxy war, which pitted the zoos on either side of the Berlin Wall, is the subject of this incredible true story. The 1960s in West Berlin were frequently like living in a zoo, with everyone crammed together behind a wall and the rest of the world always watching. East Berlin and its zoo, on the other hand, were expansive and lush, socialist utopias where everything was meticulously planned... and then rarely finished.

Berlin's two zoos in East and West quickly came to represent the two halves of the divided city. It was therefore hardly unexpected when the directors of the two zoos on either side began an animal arms race, competing to have the most pandas and hippos rather than amassing nuclear weapons. State monies were soon redirected toward providing these new animals with extravagant welcome ceremonies befitting visiting dignitaries. Zoo policy was a topic of discussion among West German presidential candidates. Finally, politicians on both sides of the Wall came to believe that if their zoo was inferior, that would mean their entire country's ideology was as well.

The Zookeepers War is an epic story of desperate rivalries, human follies, and an animal-mad city in which zookeeping became a way of continuing politics by other means. It is a quirky piece of Cold War history that is unlike anything you have ever heard.
