William Yarrell, a prominent naturalist of the 19th century, played a significant role in the growing importance of natural history in society. He authored two notable books, "A History of British Fishes" and "A History of British Birds," which gained recognition as authoritative sources even into the next century. These books are still admired today, particularly for their delightful wood engravings. Yarrell was an active member and held various positions in prestigious scientific societies, including the Zoological, Linnean, and Entomological Societies. He was highly respected by renowned naturalists such as Charles Darwin, who sought his advice on multiple occasions. In addition to his pivotal role in organizing and disseminating knowledge about the British fish and bird fauna, Yarrell conducted substantial original scientific research. He is best known for being the first to recognize Bewick's Swan as a separate species from the Whooper Swan, naming it Cygnus bewickii in honor of his renowned ornithological predecessor. Yarrell owned the London newsagency, Jones and Yarrell, with his partner, Edward Jones, from 1803 until 1850. The agency held a royal warrant and supplied newspapers to the Houses of Parliament and royalty. Alongside his work in natural history and news agency management, Yarrell was a popular figure among his friends. He was renowned for hosting delightful dinner parties, where he served excellent food and wine. He was also an avid correspondent, maintaining a wide network of connections.
