Kasos, the southernmost island of the Dodecanese, is situated between Carpathos and Crete. With a length of approximately 11 miles and a width of four miles, it boasts a rugged and mountainous landscape, earning it a renowned reputation as a hub for shipbuilding throughout antiquity. Its significance in the Greek War of Independence further solidified its historical importance. However, the advent of steam led to the closure of Kasos' shipyard, resulting in a decline in its population. Presently, around one thousand individuals reside on the island, distributed across five small villages adorned with historic homes and churches. The islanders take great pride in producing agricultural products of exceptional quality, while also cherishing and preserving their distinctive culinary, musical, and dance traditions. Additionally, Kasos warmly welcomes a select group of adventurous travelers to its pristine beaches.
Robert A. McCabes captivating black-and-white photographs, primarily taken in 1965, provide a singular glimpse into the lives of Kasos' people, architectural wonders, and awe-inspiring natural landscapes. These photographs stand in stark contrast to the transformations witnessed on other Greek islands, as many of the scenes depicted in McCabes' work remain virtually unchanged to this day. Authored by a distinguished Greek journalist born on Kasos, the text vividly brings to life the places and personalities captured in this book, appealing to all intrepid travelers seeking off-the-beaten-path experiences.
