The Douglas Invader holds a remarkable distinction of being employed by the United States in combat roles during World War II, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War. Initially conceived as an attack aircraft, designated as A-26, its primary purpose was to replace the Douglas A-20, North American B-25, and Martin B-26 in the US Army Air Forces. However, production delays hindered the aircraft's deployment until June 1944. Equipped with up to 14 forward-firing .50-caliber machine guns, as well as bombs and rockets, the Invader proved well-suited for ground strikes when the Korean War erupted in 1951. During this conflict, the Invader resumed its duty, now bearing the markings of the US Air Force and redesignated as B-26. It was initially utilized by the French during their war in Indochina and later returned to the skies over Vietnam, flown by American and South Vietnamese crews. To establish a base in Thailand, which prohibited the USAF from basing bombers in the country, the Invader was reclassified as an attack aircraft once again, and the A-26 designation was reinstated. This comprehensive volume is lavishly illustrated with over 250 photographs, encompassing a wide range of vintage color images, profile illustrations, and line drawings.
