Adults, a black comedy that seamlessly blends explosive and tender elements, delves into the lives of a group of individuals who, despite their differences, share a common belief: that they are uniquely affected by the impending end of the world. Set amidst the anonymous backdrop of Airbnbs in Edinburgh, the story revolves around Zara, a thirty-something woman who is navigating her way through the world while running her own business. Just as Zara is about to welcome a new client, her colleague arrives late, adding an extra layer of tension to the already fraught situation. What makes this encounter even more peculiar is the fact that the business they operate is a brothel, and the client is none other than Zara's old teacher. As if that weren't enough, her colleague is experiencing an existential crisis, grappling with the fear of growing up. Convinced that they are the victims of a world that has failed them, they all believe that their struggles are unparalleled and that the mess surrounding them is not their fault. However, deep down, there is a sense that something needs to break between them, before any real change can take place. Adults is a raw and darkly funny play that explores themes of alienation, loneliness, growing up, growing old, and the unwavering human need for connection, intimacy, and acceptance in a world that often fails us. This edition of the play was published in conjunction with its world premiere at the Traverse Theatre during the Festival in August 2023.
