  • More about AKIRA: Art of Wall

From 2017 to 2019, Katsuhiro Otomo and Kosuke Kawamura's AKIRA art project covered the PARCO department store in Shibuya, Tokyo. To celebrate the project's completion in 2019, a silver foil-coated collector's box was released, containing nearly 75 feet of illustrations, speech balloons, and text from AKIRA's six volumes, along with an exclusive interview with Otomo and Kawamura and photographs of the original exhibition.

From 2017 to 2019, the throngs passing through Tokyo's iconic Shibuya neighborhood were fortunate enough to witness a massive art project. The PARCO department store was closed for renovation, and Katsuhiro Otomo, the visionary creator of the landmark manga AKIRA, and collage artist Kosuke Kawamura seized the opportunity to bring Otomo's iconic work to life in a unique and captivating way.

When the project was completed in 2019, it was a remarkable coincidence that it coincided with the year the story of AKIRA began. To commemorate this milestone, a silver foil-coated collector's box presents an exquisite reproduction of Otomo and Kawamura's work, with the specifications overseen and approved by Otomo-sensei personally.

Nearly 75 feet (22.7 meters) of illustrations, speech balloons, and text selected from AKIRA's six volumes stretch across three accordion-bound volumes. A fourth volume includes an exclusive interview with Otomo and Kawamura, as well as photographs of the original exhibition by award-winning photographer TAKAMURADAISUKE.

Rounding out the box is a dramatic, 16 1/2 x 23 3/8 poster, adding an extra layer of visual allure to this extraordinary collection.

This art project not only brought AKIRA to life in a new and exciting way but also showcased the creative collaboration between Otomo and Kawamura, two artists who have made significant contributions to the world of manga and art. It serves as a testament to the enduring power of storytelling and the ability of art to transcend boundaries and connect people from different walks of life.

Whether you are a fan of AKIRA or simply appreciate the beauty of art, this collector's box is a must-have for anyone who appreciates the power of creativity and the magic of storytelling. It is a testament to the enduring legacy of AKIRA and the incredible talent of Katsuhiro Otomo and Kosuke Kawamura.
