One year after the opening of the new station, Art on the Underground published a new publication dedicated to the work of Alexandre da Cunha at Battersea Power Station in London.

Sunset, Sunrise, Sunset is a monumental kinetic sculpture that spans 95m and 60m in length, occupying a prominent space within the Underground station's ticket hall. The artwork incorporates two friezes that face each other along its length, creating a visually striking composition.

The inspiration for Sunset, Sunrise, Sunset lies in the former control room at Battersea Power Station, which was equipped with a system of vertical bars that regulated the production and output of electricity into the city. This architectural feature served as the catalyst for the artist's creative vision. By combining these historical resonances with the daily cycle of dawn to dusk, the artwork evokes themes of cycles, routine, the ordinary, and eternity.

Designed by Fraser Muggeridge Studio, the book accompanying the sculpture features a diverse range of essays. Art historian Dr Lisa Blackmore delves into the artist's practice, providing insights into his artistic journey and techniques. Architecture and design writer Gillian Darley offers a geographical and social history of the local area, exploring its architectural landmarks and the impact they have had on the surrounding community. Eleanor Pinfield, the commissioning editor for the artwork, contributes an essay on the process of bringing this unique piece to life. Additionally, experimental writer Rebecca Watson contributes a creative prose work that further explores the themes and ideas embodied in Sunset, Sunrise, Sunset.

This publication serves as a valuable resource for art enthusiasts, historians, and anyone interested in exploring the intersection of art, architecture, and urban spaces. It showcases Alexandre da Cunha's exceptional talent and provides a deeper understanding of his artistic vision, while also offering a broader perspective on the cultural and historical significance of Battersea Power Station.
