A collection of fresh and updated essays by renowned scholar and critic Professor Christopher Ricks has been assembled. Christopher Ricks has brought together new as well as significantly revised critical essays across a wide range. Several of these essays originated from his tenure as the Professor of Poetry at the University of Oxford, during which his inaugural lecture delved into the intriguing connections between poetry and prose. Comparison and analysis, which are the tools of the critic, as T.S. Eliot insisted, are energized by imaginative pairings: Samuel Johnson and Samuel Beckett, Norman Mailer and Dickens, Shakespeare and George Herbert, or secret-police surveillance in Ben Jonson's Rome and Carmen Bugan's Romania. Along Heroic Lines is dedicated to the heroic and the heroics (Othello cross-examined by T.S. Eliot; Byron and role-playing; Ion Bugan, political protest, and arrest). This tension is in contrast to the English heroic line (Dryden's heroic triplets, Henry James's cadences, Geoffrey Hill's concluding book of prose poems, and how they choose to conclude). All of these works are attentive to the balance and sustenance of alternate tones that prose and poetry can achieve in harmony.
