- More about An Historical Map of Cambridge: University and County Town
A full colour map of Cambridge, based on a digitised OS map of 1927, shows its medieval, Georgian, Victorian, and Edwardian past, with important buildings highlighted. The city is home to famous university buildings such as King's College Chapel, the University Church, and the Senate House, as well as the Shire Hall and a guildhall. It transformed from a service economy to an industrial base in the 19th century, with an extensive publishing presence and a major railway centre. Its suburbs expanded, especially to the east of the town centre. The map includes the sites of the town's major buildings, lost buildings, and the castle and shire hall.

Cambridge, a city steeped in history, boasts a rich medieval, Georgian, Victorian, and Edwardian past. It was once an important trading centre for the Romans and Anglo-Saxons and is home to some of the most famous university buildings in the country. The city's history dates back to the 1060s when William I built a castle on rising ground above the River Cam. In 1209, the first students of what would become the University arrived from Oxford, and the first college, Peterhouse, was founded in 1284. Cambridge became a city in 1951 and has since transformed from a service economy supporting the university to an industrial base with a substantial publishing presence. It has also become a major railway centre. The historical map of Cambridge, based on a digitized OS map from 1927, showcases the town's major buildings, including King's College Chapel, the University Church, and the Senate House. It also highlights the vanished medieval buildings, the site of the castle and shire hall, and the expansion of the suburbs, particularly to the east of the town centre. The map's cover provides a short introduction to the city's history and architecture.
