This captivating and exquisitely illustrated book presents for the very first time the rediscovered frescoes painted by the renowned Andrea Sacchi (1599–1661) for the loggia of Cardinal del Montes Roman palace, situated near via di Ripetta, Rome. For countless generations of scholars, Andrea Sacchi's fresco cycle has been deemed lost, its existence concealed within a private apartment in Rome. Remarkably unpublished and seldom referenced in contemporary literature, these frescoes underwent a remarkable restoration process from 2010 to 2011. Over the past three years, the author has been granted exclusive access to thoroughly examine these masterpieces, culminating in the publication of this monograph.
Accompanied by breathtaking and comprehensive photographic documentation, this scholarly study compares the painted images with the detailed description provided by the esteemed biographer Giovan Pietro Bellori. It sheds light on the iconography, style, and, most notably, the sources utilized by Sacchi in this pivotal commission of his early career. The intricate iconography of the cycles is explored with meticulous scrutiny of early sources, enabling us to resolve some particularly complex interpretive challenges, particularly those related to alchemy.
Cardinal del Montes Palazzo di Ripetta boasted a fully equipped pharmacological laboratory. The research conducted on this fresco cycle has also yielded significant new archival evidence regarding Sacchi's date and place of birth.
