Animation studies have been extensively documented in historical and contemporary texts, providing a comprehensive understanding of the last 150 years of the field. This seminal, four-volume reference work delves into the various definitions of animation, explores the nature of animation production, examines the inclusion of broadcast and interactive animation in the discourse, and offers a broader contextual understanding of animation studies. The set addresses key themes such as authorship, genre, identity politics, and spectatorship, and is arranged in a non-chronological manner to facilitate debates that have evolved over time. Each volume is introduced separately, and the essays are organized into coherent sections focused on specific themes.
