Gerkan, Marg, and Partner (gmp) is a world-leading architectural firm with over 500 employees at seven locations in Germany, China, and Vietnam. Since then, they have completed 59 projects in Italy, including train stations, airports, stadiums, hospitals, and research buildings. Gerkan,Marg, and Partner (gmp), a world-leading architectural firm with over 500 employees across seven locations in Germany, China, and Vietnam, is also one of Germany's largest. In 1996, gmp embarked on its first project in Italy, the exhibition Renaissance of Railway Stations, which was part of the 6th International Architecture Exhibition of the Venice Biennale. In 1997, gmp's winning design for the new exhibition halls in Rimini marked the beginning of a remarkable list of 59 projects in the country, encompassing diverse structures such as train stations, airports, stadiums, hospitals, and research buildings. Many of these projects were for sites of historical significance, requiring the utmost sensitivity in execution. To date, 13 of these projects have been realized.

This book presents the story of gmp's work in Italy in seven chapters, contextualizing each project within its respective historical setting. In an interview, Volkwin Marg, one of gmp's two founding partners, shares his experiences, enthusiasm for Italy's building culture, gmp's significant successes, unexpected major obstacles, challenging negotiations, and deep disappointments. Numerous color photographs, plans, and historical reference images complement the text.
