  • More about Ari, Jackie & Maria: The Pirate, the Princess and the Diva

Aristotle Onassis, Maria Callas, and Jackie Kennedy had a tumultuous love triangle. Onassis was a vicious, drunken bully who beat his wives and mistresses, built his business empire on bribery, corruption, and contempt for the law, and signed contracts in disappearing ink. His treatment of Maria Callas led her to a suicide attempt and the abortion of her only child, and her early death was partly caused by the unhappiness he inflicted on her.

The love triangle involving Aristotle Onassis, Maria Callas, and Jackie Kennedy was as explosive as the eruption of Stromboli, which initially stunned Aristotle and Maria in their romance. If they had lived in the sixteenth century, Shakespeare would have crafted a play about their remarkable story, as it was simply too captivating to overlook. Over the decades since their marriage, two myths have persisted. The first myth suggests that Onassis was a wealthy but charming rogue who evaded taxes but possessed a decent and generous nature at heart. The second myth portrays Jackie Onassis as a shameless gold-digger and spendthrift, driven solely by greed and personal ambition. However, the truth was far different from these narratives. Onassis was a vicious, drunken bully who subjected his wives and mistresses to brutal beatings, often leaving them bloodied and coercing them into abortions. When he grew tired of them, he resorted to media smear campaigns, tapped their phones, and publicly humiliated them. His business empire was largely built on bribery, corruption, and a disdain for the law. He signed contracts in disappearing ink, reviled politicians who could not be bought, conducted business with dictators, and habitually lied. The fear his children felt in his presence was so profound that they would wet themselves when confronted by him. His treatment of Maria Callas, his mistress, was particularly cruel, leading her to attempt suicide and ultimately abort her only child. Her early death at the age of fifty-three was partly a result of the unhappiness he inflicted upon her.
