  • More about Ars Notoria: The Method - Version B: Mediaeval Angel Magic

The Ars Notoria is a mediaeval grimoire that was widely distributed and popular in the 13th-16th century, but has recently been rediscovered. Version B (MS Bibliothèque Nationale Lat. 9336.) is a commentary on the Method that has never been published in English before. This text reorganises the commentary into subject order without losing any practical detail. The Ars Notoria is still relevant in the 21st century as it contains techniques to absorb whole subjects rapidly and understand complex topics on first reading. It was attributed to famous individuals such as Solomon, Apollonius of Tyana, Euclid of Thebes, and Mani and was translated into Greek by Apollonius of Tyana. This edition contains all the notae matched with complete invocations/orations and instructions for their use.

The Ars Notoria, a mediaeval grimoire, gained widespread popularity during the 13th to 16th centuries but remained largely unknown until recent times. Version B (MS Bibliothèque Nationale Lat. 9336.) is a commentary on the Method, which has never been published in English before. This present text reorganises that commentary into subject order while preserving practical details. All notae and invocations/orations are included, although most Latin prayers have been omitted as they do not contribute to the effectiveness of the methods.

Despite its historical significance, the Ars Notoria has not been printed in its complete form. After its initial Latin appearance, there was only one incomplete English translation by Robert Turner in 1657, which omitted the essential component for its operation, the n. This omission rendered the grimoire less effective in practice.

In the 21st century, the Ars Notoria remains highly relevant due to its detailed techniques for rapid absorption of knowledge and understanding of complex subjects on first reading. It serves as a valuable tool for students seeking to acquire knowledge quickly. Unlike other Solomonic grimoires, which focus on evocation of spirits or demons, the Ars Notoria is unique in its emphasis on angel magic, particularly memory and the ability to comprehend and retain information rapidly. This makes it a true student's grimoire, a key to unlocking knowledge in a fast-paced world.

Despite its popularity and enduring history, the Ars Notoria has never been fully printed in its original form. This has led to a limited availability of the grimoire, making it a sought-after treasure for those interested in ancient magic and esoteric knowledge. The lack of a complete English translation has also contributed to its obscurity, as many potential practitioners may be deterred by the challenges of accessing the original text.

In conclusion, the Ars Notoria is a remarkable mediaeval grimoire that has remained largely unknown until recent times. Its commentary on the Method offers valuable insights into ancient magic and knowledge acquisition techniques. Despite its historical significance and enduring value, the grimoire has not been fully printed in its original form, limiting its accessibility to a select few. However, its relevance in the 21st century as a tool for rapid learning and understanding makes it a valuable resource for those seeking to expand their knowledge and explore the depths of ancient magic.
