  • More about Asian Migration and New Racism: Beyond Colour and the 'West'

Studies of racism against migrants have traditionally focused on the white/Other binary, ignoring racialization and racism by Asians and among Asians. This book contributes to existing studies of migration by examining new geographical sites of racialization and racism, illuminating racialization and racism beyond the white/Others binary, and introducing new dynamics in racialization and racist discourses, including intersectional factors such as nationality, class, gender, language, religion, temporal framings, and postcoloniality.

Format: Hardback
Length: 208 pages
Publication date: 20 October 2022
Publisher: Taylor & Francis Ltd

Studies of racism against migrants have recently sought to transcend the perceived dichotomy between "white" and "others," yet the bulk of research continues to predominantly focus on white individuals racializing "others," be it Black, Asian, or Muslim. By solely attending to this white/other binary, this approach homogenizes specific non-white groups, such as Asians, while disregarding the racialization and racism experienced by Asians and among Asians. Consequently, there exists a significant lack of studies on issues of race in non-white contexts. This book makes valuable contributions to existing scholarship on migration by exploring three key themes: co-ethnicity, intersectionality, and postcoloniality. Through these lenses, the book examines new geographical sites of racialization and racism, sheds light on racialization and racism beyond the white/others binary, and introduces novel dynamics in racialization and racist discourses, encompassing intersectional factors such as nationality, class, gender, language, religion, temporal framings, and postcoloniality.

Asian Migration and New Racism will appeal to scholars and advanced students of Sociology, Social and Political Geography, Social Anthropology, History, and Politics. The chapters in this book were originally published as a special issue of Ethnic and Racial Studies.
