In the summer of 1968, Frank Banner and his wife Gail relocate to the Suffolk coast to work at a newly constructed nuclear power station, seeking to escape the violence and pain they had experienced in their past. Gail desires a child, while Frank is solely focused on spending time in the dazzling reactor core of the Seton One power station. Their neighboring community consists of Atomics, who are also part of the power station. However, Frank develops an instant dislike for Maynard, a boorish and predatory individual who begins pursuing a young woman who works in the power station's medical center.
Driven by his protective instincts, Frank decides to intervene. As the sun beats relentlessly upon the bleak landscape, his demons resurface. A vicious and merciless voice echoes in his mind, reminding him of his obligation to safeguard the young woman. Frank knows exactly how to fulfill this duty: radiation will make him stronger, radiation will transform him into a hero.
The Atomics is a gothic tale of madness, revenge, and Uranium-235. It explores the dark corners of human nature, where the line between good and evil becomes blurred, and the consequences of power and obsession are dire. Through its characters, the story delves into the themes of sacrifice, redemption, and the ultimate price of survival.
