  • More about Bath: The Postcard Collection

Since the Romans built baths and a temple in the Avon valley, Bath has been a popular spa town. Although the city has seen many changes, including aerial bombardment during the Second World War, Bath's Georgian architecture is one of its chief glories today. Alan Spree's Postcard Collection provides a pictorial record of life in Bath in the past, featuring many landmarks that remain familiar today.

Since the Romans constructed baths and a temple at the location of hot springs in the Avon valley, the spa town of Bath has attracted visitors. Although Bath Abbey was established in the seventh century, it was in the eighteenth century that the town rose to prominence as the fashion capital of England. One of Bath's greatest assets today is its Georgian architecture, but the city has undergone numerous changes over the years, not least the devastation caused by aerial bombardment during the Second World War. New housing and commercial redevelopment were seen in the city in the post-war years, museums opened, new industries were established, and its two universities expanded.

In his book In Bath: The Postcard Collection, author Alan Spree has compiled a remarkable selection of old postcards that provide a pictorial record of life in Bath in the past. While some of the historical Bath depicted in these views has been lost, many landmarks have remained and are familiar to people today. This fascinating collection of images will be of interest to those who have lived in Bath or are familiar with the city.
