During the lockdown in Spring and Summer 2020, Irish Pensions & Finance and The Irish Times collaborated to run a competition celebrating Irish people's love of a good story and a good laugh. Hundreds of entries were received, from all over the island and points beyond, by people from all walks of life. The best stories were gathered into a book, "Brevity is the Soul: Wit from Locked-Down Ireland," which showcases the sublime to the ridiculous, from Graham Norton's Big Red Chair to Samuel Beckett's dark humor.

Amidst the global lockdown in Spring and Summer 2020, Ireland, like many parts of the world, grappled with the challenge of uplifting spirits amidst the unprecedented circumstances. Seeking a solution, we joined forces with Irish Pensions & Finance, envisioning a competition that would celebrate the Irish people's enduring love for captivating stories and infectious laughter. With two simple requirements in mind – to be both humorous and concise – we were astounded by the overwhelming response we received. Hundreds of entries flooded in from across the island and beyond, originating from individuals from diverse walks of life. The judges were faced with the daunting task of selecting only three winners from this vast array of exceptional submissions. However, in the spirit of inclusivity, we decided to compile the finest stories into a captivating book. Here, we present to you the essence of Brevity is the Soul: Wit from Locked-Down Ireland. From the sublime to the ridiculous, this collection spans a spectrum of humor, reminiscent of Graham Norton's Big Red Chair and Samuel Beckett's dark wit.
