When Elaine Feinstein first encountered Tsvetaeva's poems in the 1960s, they had a profound impact on her. Their intensity and honesty spoke directly to her. Feinstein's first translations of Tsvetaeva's work, published in 1971, were met with acclaim. In later years, she added to her translations, notably the sequence "Girlfriend," dedicated to Tsvetaeva's lover, the poet Sofia Parnok. Feinstein also published Tsvetaeva's biography in 1987.
