Before the announcement of the British Railways modernisation plan in 1955, diesel trains had already made their debut. The first of these was the BR Derby Lightweight design, which was introduced in 1954. In the same year, Metro-Cammell trains also joined the fleet. These innovative and efficient trains were deployed in the West Riding of Yorkshire, serving various routes around Leeds and Bradford. Their immediate success was evident, as these new, cleaner, and faster trains significantly increased traffic levels on all the routes they were utilized. As a result, BR decided to introduce similar types of these trains across the entire BR system. These trains were constructed by various companies and were put to use on a diverse range of services, including city commuter trains and middle-distance mainline operations. George Woods has compiled a remarkable collection of previously unpublished photographs, showcasing the trains in service from Perth down to Cornwall and Workington to Hull between 1966 and 1985.
