The characters are all so well-drawn and complex and flawed. I found myself rooting for them all, even the ones I didn't particularly like. And the ending was just perfect. It was both unexpected and satisfying, and it left me feeling both happy and sad.
I highly recommend this book to anyone who loves a good mystery/thriller. It's one of the best I've read in a long time.
Brixton Hill, the latest offering from acclaimed author Lottie Moggach, exudes the same confident allure as its predecessors and presents Moggach's most accomplished narrative to date. The novel intricately weaves together a series of charged encounters on the streets of south London, creating a palpable sense of tension and suspense.
Moggach's writing is masterful, with vivid details that vividly evoke the prison environment and the overwhelming feeling of being suspended over the abyss. The characters are intricately crafted, each with their own unique flaws and motivations. The reader is drawn into their lives, rooting for them despite their imperfections.
One morning, as Rob, the protagonist, exits the prison gates, he begins a short walk to a local charity shop, where he spends his days sorting through discarded belongings. All he needs to do is maintain his composure and avoid trouble, and he will be released in a few months. However, as he becomes increasingly entangled with a well-dressed woman he encounters on Brixton Hill, Rob realizes that his carefully laid plans may be jeopardized.
The woman, whose identity remains a mystery throughout the novel, seems to have a growing interest in Rob. Despite coming from vastly different worlds, the pair slowly become acquainted, and Rob finds himself increasingly desperate to hide his current residence from her. But as he delves deeper into her past, he discovers that she may hold the key to his freedom.
Brixton Hill is a captivating study of desperate lives, filled with unexpected twists and turns. Moggach's writing is masterful, and the novel's ending is both unexpected and satisfying, leaving the reader with a mix of emotions. This is a must-read for anyone who loves a good mystery/thriller, as it is one of the best books of its kind in recent years.
