The cave, both in its physical form and as a metaphor, serves as a daring challenge to the boundaries of contemporary architecture. It beckons us to explore fresh perspectives on how architecture can evolve to align with a future that prioritizes community, ecological sensitivity, and low-carbon sustainability. This publication, along with the accompanying sixth exhibition in The Architects Studio series at the Louisiana Museum of Modern Art, pays tribute to the Kenyan architectural firm Cave_bureau. Stella Mutegi and Kabage Karanja, founders of Cave_bureau, present eight of their remarkable projects in this publication. Accompanied by thought-provoking essays, these visuals delve into profound inquiries about the future of architecture in the age of the Anthropocene, the impact of colonial extraction and erasure on African architecture, as well as the unique characteristics of each continent and geographic space.
Established in 2014 by Stella Mutegi and Kabage Karanja, CAVE_BUREAU is a Nairobi-based architectural bureau and research collective. The bureau conducts explorations into architecture and urbanism within natural contexts. Their work aims to address the anthropological and geological backdrop of African cities, seeking to confront the complexities of our contemporary rural and urban lives.
