Cecilia Beverly, an orphan, inherits a small fortune from her uncle, with the condition that she must retain her Beverly name when she marries. After leaving for London to live with her guardians, she discovers that each of the three families is greedy and vain. She visits Mr. Monckton, a friend of the Harrels, and is surprised to meet the beautiful and intelligent Miss Beverly. Mr. Monckton admires Cecilia, but is upset that he married for money instead of waiting to meet someone like her.

Cecilia attends a masquerade ball thrown by Mrs. Harrel, where she is unable to meet people due to a mysterious man dressed as a black demon chasing others away. After being rescued by a mysterious man masquerading as White Domino, it becomes a pattern in her social life. Cecilia is rescued again at the opera by Mortimer Delvile, who reveals his identity as a wealthy nobleman.

Cecilia spends time with Mortimer's family and begins to fall in love with him. However, Mortimer believes she is engaged to one of the many suitors trying to win her favor. Cecilia must overcome the manipulation and extortion from her guardians and dangerous admirers to protect her fortune and find true love.
