Clara Schulmann, a captivating author, skillfully weaves a tapestry of female voices, ranging from Edith Wharton to bell hooks, and from her contemporaries to Schulmann herself. Through this delicate chorus, she blurs the boundaries between the body and the art, the personal and the political. As she embarks on the task of collecting these words for an essay she is planning to write, other women's words invade her life, seeping through the radio, podcasts, songs, and films. These words, uttered by novelists, feminist intellectuals, friends, or strangers overheard in the street, like errant weeds or poisonous seeds, infiltrate her psyche, reshaping the essay she once envisioned into a picaresque adventure.

CHICANES, a captivating work, unveils Clara Schulmann as an author whose voice will undoubtedly hold significant weight in the years to come. In a remarkable refinement of her artistic experiment, her work finds its way into English through the talented efforts of eight female translators.
