The Banished of Balsapuerto is an investigation into the murder of a series of Peruvian Amazonian healers and the theories that support them, using a combination of on-site interviews, police and court materials, local press excerpts, as well as original photographs and illustrations. In late 2011, national Peruvian news outlets reported a news story about a series of barbaric murders that took place deep in the Peruvian Amazon, in a region called Balsapuerto, home to the Shawi indigenous people. In just ten months, 14 traditional Shawi healers were victims of a brutal murder spree. According to local reports, the alleged perpetrator of these murders was the then-acting mayor of Balsapuerto, Alfredo Torres Rucoba. Accused of carrying out a political assassination campaign against healers, he and his brother Augusto earned the nickname Los Matabrujos.
