Class 159s

In the early 1990s, the Waterloo to Exeter route experienced delays and problems due to unreliable diesel locos. To improve services, 22 Class 158 units were modified as Class 159s and later eight more Class 158s were modified as Class 159/1s. However, as they approach 30 years old, replacement is imminent.

In the early 1990s, the Waterloo to Exeter route faced numerous delays and issues due to the unreliable diesel locomotives in operation. Recognizing the need for a solution, it was decided that introducing new trains was the best course of action. At that time, an existing order for Class 158 units was already in progress, and it was decided to modify the final 22 of these units as Class 159s, specifically for use on western England services. The first of these modified units commenced work on the line in May 1993, gradually replacing all the remaining locomotives and stock. However, as the demand for travel on the route increased, it became apparent that the initial 22 units were insufficient. To address this, a further eight Class 158s that were redundant in the north of England were modified as Class 159/1s and entered service in the mid-2000s. While their service has been commendable, with many years of reliable operation under their belts, it is inevitable that they will reach the end of their lifespan soon. With the passage of time, the need for replacement becomes increasingly urgent, ensuring that the route continues to provide a safe and efficient transportation option for passengers.
