- More about Cognitive Dependability Engineering: Managing Risks in Cyber-Physical-Social Systems under Deep Uncertainty
Systems engineering is a context-oriented analysis and synthesis of complex engineered systems to ensure continuous and safe operations under uncertainty. It is divided into four parts: an overview of the development of systems engineering, an evolutionary character of the dependability concept, an analysis and synthesis of Cyber-Physical-Social (CPS) Systems, and a framework for cognitive dependability based problem-solving in CPS Systems operating under deep uncertainty. Three practical examples of disasters have been demonstrated to illustrate the possibilities and purposefulness of using this framework.

The work presented here is a comprehensive and context-oriented analysis and synthesis of complex engineered systems, aimed at ensuring continuous and safe operations under conditions of uncertainty. The book is organized into four parts, each exploring different aspects of systems engineering.
The first part provides an overview of the development of systems engineering, starting from the fundamentals of Systems Science and Single Systems Engineering, progressing to System of Systems Engineering and finally reaching Cognitive Systems Engineering. The Cognitive Systems Engineering model is built upon the concept of imperfect knowledge acquisition and management.
The second part delves into the evolutionary nature of the dependability concept over the past fifty years. It begins with simple models based on classical probability theory and progresses to encompass concepts such as tolerating faults, resilience engineering, and Cognitive Dependability Engineering (CDE). CDE is based on the idea of continuous smart operation, both under normal and abnormal conditions.
The third part focuses on the analysis and synthesis of Cyber-Physical-Social (CPS) Systems. This methodology involves modeling the structure of CPS systems, simulating their behavior in changing conditions, and assessing the dependability of the entire system based on CDE principles.
The final part addresses the challenge of dealing with risks in CPS systems in situations of high uncertainty. To address this, the concept of a Cognitive Digital Twin is introduced, supporting the process of solving complex problems by experts. Based on this concept, a framework for cognitive dependability-based problem-solving in CPS Systems operating under deep uncertainty is developed.
The possibilities and purposefulness of using this framework are demonstrated through three practical examples, showcasing the application of cognitive dependability principles in various domains.
In conclusion, this work offers a valuable contribution to the field of systems engineering, providing a comprehensive and up-to-date understanding of complex engineered systems and their dependability in uncertain environments. It serves as a valuable resource for researchers, practitioners, and policymakers alike
