Chinese theatre underwent a significant transformation during the cultural revolution, drawing inspiration from reformed Beijing operas. The entire spectrum of theatre arts, including straight plays, acrobatics, ballet, and ballads, experienced profound changes. Alongside the professional theatre, a flourishing of workers' and peasants' amateur theatre further fueled innovation. This book, originally published in 1978, provides a historical context for these developments and offers a comprehensive overview of Chinese theatre at the time. It traces the emergence of the new drama since 1949 and delves into the political principles behind the reforms. It explores the growth of the new amateur theatre and showcases representative plays and operas performed in China.
