In the 19th century, there were commercial solutions for dealing with domestic infestation by mice and rats, such as Battles Vermin Killer, Hunters Infallible Vermin Destroyer, and Barbers Magic Vermin Killer. These products were sold cheaply over the counter and through the post, making serious money for manufacturers, wholesalers, and shopkeepers. However, they also contributed to a suicide epidemic and provided a convenient means for the disposal of inconvenient spouses, children, and insured individuals.

The nineteenth century witnessed a significant surge in the availability of commercially accessible solutions for addressing the issue of domestic infestation by mice and rats. These solutions, promising a reliable means of eradicating the "furry detestables," were widely marketed and sold at affordable prices, both over the counter and through postal services. The trade in these hazardous products proved to be highly lucrative for manufacturers, wholesalers, and shopkeepers, generating substantial profits. However, this prosperity came at a grave cost, as it also contributed to what was often referred to as a suicide epidemic, frequently involving desperate young women in domestic service. Moreover, the deadly packets of poison offered a convenient means for disposing of inconvenient spouses, abusive husbands, or insured children.

One notable example of such a product was Battles Vermin Killer, produced in Lincoln around 1850. In his book titled "Battles Vermin Killer," Malcolm Moyes delves into a harrowing catalog of human misfortune and disaster, particularly focusing on the story of thirteen-year-old Elizabeth Vamplew. In 1862, Elizabeth was indicted for the shocking murder of an infant in her care, using a strychnine-based vermin killer. This tragic incident serves as a powerful illustration of the devastating consequences of the widespread use of such dangerous products during that time.

Malcolm Moyes, a renowned author specializing in nineteenth-century Lincolnshire crime and punishment, has written several distinguished books on this subject. His meticulous research and insightful analysis provide a deep understanding of the social, economic, and cultural contexts that shaped the lives of individuals and communities during this period. Through his writings, Moyes sheds light on the darker aspects of nineteenth-century society, challenging our perceptions of the past and highlighting the urgent need for ethical and responsible practices in our modern world.
