Duffy and frustration are inseparable companions, much like gin and tonic.
- David Bailey
Renowned as the photographer who captured the stars he immortalized, Brian Duffy etched the iconic portrait of Swinging London in the vibrant 1960s. Alongside David Bailey and Terence Donovan, Duffy is celebrated as one of the trailblazers of documentary fashion photography, a style that revolutionized the industry. Their audacious attitude and aesthetic became synonymous with the scene, giving birth to the cult of the fashion photographer and inspiring the iconic film Blow-Up (Michelangelo Antonioni, 1966).

As Duffy himself aptly observed, before 1960, a fashion photographer was typically tall, slender, and camp. However, we three stood out as distinct individuals: short, fat, and heterosexual! The press affectionately referred to the three photographers as "The Terrible Three," while Norman Parkinson further elevated their notoriety by dubbing them "The Black Trinity." Duffy's most renowned photograph is undoubtedly the Mona Lisa of pop, gracing the cover of David Bowie's Aladdin Sane. Over the course of eight years, he collaborated closely with Bowie, exerting a profound influence on the numerous reinventions of Bowie's image. It is fitting, therefore, that this new edition of Duffy should delve deeper into their collaborative work, accompanied by fresh images. This new edition of Duffy also presents a treasure trove of other, newly discovered images from the photographer's archive, showcasing both the stars and the photographer in their prime.
