Elia Albas captivating photographic portrait series, The Supper Club, delves into the lives and artistic expressions of U.S.-based artists of color. Accompanied by excerpts from engaging dinner conversations, these portraits address pressing issues related to race and visual culture, encompassing themes such as sanctuary, policing, post-black identity, and intersectional identities that intertwine gender, race, and privilege.
Curated by Sara Reisman for the Shelley & Donald Rubin Foundation, The Supper Club takes a unique approach by combining socially engaged dinners with captivating portraits of the artist participants. Albas began her artistic journey in 2012, capturing the vibrant portraits of artists like LaToya Ruby Frazier and Mickalene Thomas.
Driven by a deep commitment to her community, Alba has organized a series of 25 dinners, each with a distinct theme. These themes range from Baltimore to Race and Identity (in honor of Freddy Gray) and Racial Subjugation in Latin America. Drawing inspiration from Vanity Fairs iconic "Hollywood Issue," Albas' portraits not only capture the unique essence of each artist but also transform them into iconic images that resonate with viewers.
Through The Supper Club, Albas invites us to explore the complexities of race, identity, and culture through the lens of art. Her powerful portraits and thought-provoking conversations shed light on the experiences and perspectives of artists of color, challenging societal norms and promoting empathy and understanding.
