The only single authored book that comprehensively guides students through first principles and the diverse array of overlapping and competing approaches to environmental governance. It delves into governance in a broad sense, encompassing how the environment is controlled, manipulated, regulated, and contested by a range of actors and institutions. Conceptual material is illustrated through case studies of real-world issues and applied policy examples, showcasing how theoretical perspectives can unveil previously hidden problems and solutions. Critical and interdisciplinary, the book equips students with the ability to recognize the strengths and weaknesses of different approaches to environmental governance.

The opening section of the book engages with the COVID-19 pandemic to recognize the potential for financial stimulus and evidence international collective action in addressing a global crisis. Throughout all chapters, discussions on climate change summits are updated to reflect the most recent developments. Key examples include advancements in technologies such as electric vehicles and withdrawals of projects like the Desertec Foundations project in the Sahara.

The second edition of the book will replace or update figures and case studies throughout, maintaining the book's overall order. Two of the key debates that have become outdated will be removed. The illustrations in the first edition will be updated, and Chapter 10 on participation and politics will be expanded to include examples drawn from climate strikes, extinction rebellion, and the anti-fracking movement.
