Ralph Steadman, a renowned cartoonist and national treasure, has created a captivating collection of paintings that explore the extinct birds of our world. When Ceri Levy approached him to create one piece of art for a recent exhibition, Ghosts of Gone Birds, Ralph enthusiastically agreed and went on to produce an astonishing 100 paintings, titled Extinct Boids. This book documents the discoveries made by Ralph and Ceri during their travels through the savage seas of extinction, where they stumbled upon the previously hidden Toadstool Island, home to the extinct birds of the world. The duo spent nearly a year in close proximity to a host of fantastical avian creatures, capturing their unique interpretations in Ralph's remarkable paintings. From well-known birds like the Great Auk, Passenger Pigeon, and Dodo to lesser-known members of the feathersome firmament, such as the Snail-eating Coua and the Red-moustached Fruit Dove, and even bizarre beasts like the Gob Swallow, the Long-legged Shortwing, and the Needless Smut, all are brought to life with a riot of expression and colour, infused with Ralph's trademark humour. Ceri's accompanying text provides a running commentary, detailing the unfolding madness behind the creation of each piece in Ralph's extraordinary work. As the pair discovered the many amazing birds that have been lost from our world forever, things got tough, but Ralph reminded them that it was a nice change from drawing politicians.
