  • More about Facing Armageddon: With the RAF on Christmas Island 1961-1962

Chas Hall, a 20-year-old RAF serviceman, was posted to Christmas Island in late 1961 for 25 atmospheric nuclear tests. This book reveals the extent of the controversial nuclear testing and how it affected servicemen, with 25 men dying and many more suffering mentally. The British government announced medals for nuclear test veterans in November 2022 to recognise their contribution, and Chas' story provides insight into why they deserve the recognition.

In July 1960, at the age of twenty, Chas Hall enlisted in the Royal Air Force (RAF) and committed to serving for an additional three years, eventually becoming a regular serviceman. After completing initial training, he assumed the role of a wireless operator and was stationed at RAF Mildenhall. Shortly after, in late 1961, he received his first foreign posting to Christmas Island.

It was on this island that Chas encountered the haunting realities of nuclear testing. Under the operation codenamed "Brigadoon" by the British government and "Dominic" by the Americans, Chas underwent a staggering 25 atmospheric nuclear tests. This experience, which he describes as his "12-month sentence," involved over 300 British and 10,000 American servicemen who were stationed in one corner of a remote coral island.

Facing Armageddon sheds light on the controversial nature of nuclear testing and its profound impact on servicemen. During Chas's time on Christmas Island, tragically, 25 men lost their lives, and countless others suffered mentally as they continued their service on the island.

In November 2022, the British government announced the issuance of medals to veterans of nuclear tests, recognizing their invaluable contributions to these experiments after a four-year campaign led by participants and The Mirror newspaper. Chas's story provides valuable insight into why these servicemen deserve this recognition for their part in these tests.

This book will feature a collection of unpublished photographs from the author's personal collection, serving as a crucial piece of work in understanding the challenging conditions servicemen endured during their time on Christmas Island.
