Faith in Asylum

Revd Dr Nicholas Sagovsky reflects on asylum, hospitality, and human dignity from the perspective of Christian faith and pastoral experience. Drawing on his ministry among asylum seekers in an Immigration Detention Centre, he explores the suffering, fear, and loss of identity endured by those fleeing persecution, while also examining the moral responsibilities of society, the state, and the Church towards vulnerable strangers seeking refuge. Grounding his argument in Scripture and the legacy of figures such as Charles Gore and Dietrich Bonhoeffer, Sagovsky presents hospitality not simply as generosity but as a test of a society’s humanity. He offers an analysis of asylum policy, arguing for systems shaped by justice, compassion, and respect for human rights rather than fear or political expediency. Throughout this book the stranger becomes a place of encounter with Christ himself. Humane, and quietly urgent, these reflections offer a compelling Christian vision of asylum as an expression of shared human dignity and responsibility.
