The Panzerjäger Tiger (P) was a powerful tank destroyer fielded in small numbers by the Wehrmacht, based on an early design of the Panzer VI Tiger tank. After disappointing performance at Kursk, the 48 surviving Ferdinands were returned to the factory for rebuilding and modification, and the name was changed from Ferdinand to Elefant. This new volume illustrates the combat history of both the Ferdinand and Elefant and provides background information on the development of the Porsche Tiger design.

The Panzerjäger Tiger (P) was a formidable tank destroyer deployed in limited numbers by the Wehrmacht. As evident from its name, this series of 90 vehicles drew its inspiration from an early iteration of the Panzer VI Tiger tank, specifically the unsuccessful tank design prototype developed by Ferdinand Porsche. In fact, upon their initial deployment, these colossal tank killers were initially referred to as Ferdinands. However, their performance during the Battle of Kursk proved to be unsatisfactory, leading to the return of 48 surviving Ferdinands to the factory for rebuilding and modification. Shortly after, the name of these vehicles was altered from Ferdinands to Elefant. Through a collection of vintage photographs, this new volume showcases the combat history of both the Ferdinand and Elefant, while also providing valuable background information that sheds light on the development of the ill-fated Porsche Tiger design. Accompanying the vintage photos are over 110 full-color photographs of the sole two surviving examples, offering a detailed visual exploration of their construction and wartime modifications. These photographs vividly illustrate the intricate details and adaptations that made these tank destroyers formidable weapons of war.
